This was a huge, full-body YES from me!!! I love shopping small, especially during the holidays, and while I'm fortunate enough to have a town full of appealing boutiques AND Manhattan's wonderful small businesses, it's a great reminder to call stores you love in other areas and shop directly.

Separately, you must listen to this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UB-NjDicZmI&list=RDUB-NjDicZmI&start_radio=1

The ultimate holiday retail song!

Yes, call the stores you discover on road trips or loved while living in different cities!

There was a snow storm in January and our store was open. I was alone the entire day save for one phone call from a customer in New Jersey. He wanted me to ship a supply of cotton paper napkins. These can be found from various online stores but he visits us a couple of times a year and wants to make sure places like ours thrive. We had a wonderful conversation while I picked through our stacks of napkins to find exactly what he wanted. Months later, a customer appears at the register with a stack of napkins. I ask for his name in our loyalty program and immediately recognize it as the man I talked to in January. What a delight to meet in person! He's been in a few times and we catch up like old friends. This is what will be destroyed if everything moves online. Human connection is vital!

I can't wait to listen to the song! Happy Thanksgiving!

This is a great reminder, thank you Jessica. We all need a reminder to be more compassionate and to support small independent businesses now more than ever.

Well done!!! You enumerated so many challenges and hurts. It’s true. Shopkeepers open a brick and mortar store to happily work with people. Mostly it’s terrific. But sometimes….

Thank you for supporting the small shopkeepers everywhere!!!

Good manners when shopping are really just an extension of presenting yourself well. So entirely inline with this site.
